SEO earns a position in the list of search results. AEO structures a page so search features and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it. GEO makes a business easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT and Gemini to understand and recommend. For a small business the order is SEO foundations first, then answer-first content, then consistent business details and reviews.
Three acronyms are being sold as three separate jobs. For a small business they are three layers of the same job, and the order in which you do them matters more than the labels.
We explain the layers, give a checklist that covers all three, and share what we saw when we checked which sites Google's AI Overviews cited for Indian queries.
What do SEO, AEO and GEO each mean?
| Term | Aim | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| SEO, search engine optimisation | Rank pages in the list of search results | Google and Bing result pages, Maps |
| AEO, answer engine optimisation | Get a direct answer lifted from your page | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants, AI Overviews |
| GEO, generative engine optimisation | Be understood and recommended by AI systems | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot answers |
Our plain-English explainer is What is GEO. In practice the three share most of their work: a clear page, a direct answer, trustworthy details about who you are.
What should a small business do first?
- SEO foundations. A fast, mobile-friendly site, a clear title and heading on every page, a verified Google Business Profile and a sitemap. Without this nothing else counts. Timelines are in how long SEO takes in India.
- Answer-first content. Put a two-to-three-sentence direct answer at the top of each page, use question-style headings and add a short FAQ. This is what AEO means in practice.
- Consistent business details. Name, address, phone, services and hours the same everywhere. Add structured data so machines read them correctly. See schema markup for a local business in India.
- Reviews and mentions. AI systems and Google both treat independent mentions as evidence.
- Optional extras. A machine-readable summary file, covered in the llms.txt guide.
What did we see when we checked AI Overviews for Indian queries?
In September 2026 we ran India-locale Google searches for a set of small-business marketing and local queries and looked at which sites the AI Overview cited. Three observations:
- For "how to get recommended by ChatGPT local business india", the cited sources were small Indian agency and marketing blogs, among them pagetraffic.in and factoryjet.com, plus Quora, not only large global publications.
- For "schema markup for local business india" and "local seo checklist india", the citations were again mostly small Indian agency sites.
- For the broad definition query "what is answer engine optimization", the cited sources were large publishers and course sites such as Coursera and PwC.
This was a limited sample of a dozen queries on one day, and results change. It suggests something useful, though: on narrow, local and India-specific questions, a small site with a clear answer can be cited. On broad definition queries, big publishers dominate. That supports writing specific, local, answer-first pages instead of chasing generic terms.
What should you not do?
- Do not buy "GEO packages" that promise a ChatGPT ranking. No one controls the answer an AI system gives.
- Do not stuff pages with questions. A direct answer beats a wall of keywords.
- Do not neglect the basics. Pages that rank and load fast are the ones most often cited.
To see whether AI tools mention your business, this guide shows how to measure it, and this one explains how to get mentioned.
We apply this to our own blog: every article opens with a short direct answer, uses question headings and carries FAQ schema. That is the same approach we apply to client sites through our SEO work and our dedicated AEO & GEO agency page.
What does an answer-first page look like?
Take a question a customer really asks, such as how much reel editing costs in Rajkot, and use it as the heading. Under it, give the direct answer in two or three sentences with the key number, before any background. Then add the detail: a table, the factors that change the answer and an example. Finish with a short FAQ that repeats the two or three related questions people ask next. That structure is the one our blog uses, with a labelled short answer at the top of every article. It serves a reader who wants the answer in ten seconds, a search feature that lifts a snippet and an AI system that needs a clean passage to quote, all with the same page.
Key Takeaways
- SEO ranks pages, AEO gets answers lifted from pages and GEO makes a business understood and recommended by AI systems.
- Do them in order: SEO foundations, then answer-first content, then consistent details and reviews.
- In our September 2026 India check, AI Overviews for narrow local queries often cited small Indian agency blogs.
- Broad definition queries were dominated by large publishers, so write specific, local answers.
- No one can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation. Beware of packages that promise one.
Before You Ask
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in the list of search results. AEO structures a page so search features and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it, such as featured snippets and AI Overviews. GEO makes a business easy for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to understand and recommend. They overlap heavily, and for a small business they are layers of one job.
Should a small business do SEO or GEO first?
SEO first. A fast site, clear titles and headings, a verified Google Business Profile and a sitemap are the foundation that AEO and GEO build on, and pages that rank are the ones AI systems most often cite. Then add answer-first content and a short FAQ, keep your name, address and services consistent everywhere, and collect real reviews.
Can a small website be cited by Google AI Overviews?
Yes. In a September 2026 check of India-locale queries we ran, AI Overviews for narrow local topics such as getting recommended by ChatGPT and schema markup for local businesses often cited small Indian agency blogs. It was a limited sample of about a dozen queries, and results change. Broad definition queries were dominated by large publishers, so specific answers are the better target.
*The AI Overview observations come from our own India-locale check of about a dozen queries in September 2026. It is a limited sample and results change over time. Safar Spectrum Media does not claim any control over answers given by AI systems.
